(May 1, 2010)
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf today received an enthusiastic welcome upon arrival in Foya, Lofa County, at the start of a two-day visit to the area.

As part of ceremonies marking the President’s safe arrival, residents of Foya gathered at the Global Free Pentecostal Church for an intercessory service.

The Liberian leader, speaking at a welcome program, praised the residents of Lofa for leading the way in food production in the country. The President observed that Lofa is blessed with a vast landscape that is suitable for agriculture development, and urged residents there to take advantage of the abundant land resources to grow more food.

The President commended the residents of Foya, in particular, for the level of development in the district, and she urged Liberians to follow Foya’s example.

Agriculture, the President said, is the bedrock for sustaining national development, and she reiterated her call to all citizens to get involved in agricultural activities to reduce the country’s dependence on imported commodities, particularly rice.

The President assured the people of Lofa of Government’s continued support as they boost the nation’s agriculture sector.

The President later visited the ADA/LAP farm project on the outskirts of Foya to evaluate its progress.

While in Foya, the Liberian leader will also dedicate a health center, a new police barracks, and an administrative building.

A town hall meeting is also scheduled with the people of Foya before the President and entourage depart the district for Kolahun on Sunday, May 2.
